Original Compositions
Superstars on the Horizon
I challenged myself to compose original character themes inspired by Animal Crossing villagers. Since there are usually ten villagers per island (in New Horizons), I chose ten villagers to compose themes for. I've lovingly titled this album "Superstars on the Horizon" in honor of these ten superstars in New Horizons!
Let the Light In
This 4-mallet marimba solo is my original composition for "Lighthouse," a fundraiser album for Out Youth. Out Youth is a charity that supports LGBTQIA+ youth in central Texas and 100% of the profits from this album will be donated to support their cause. I’m incredibly grateful to Caitlin Ayala for putting this album together and inviting me to compose a piece for it!
The beginning sections of this solo have more dissonance and space, reflecting a sense of emptiness and discomfort. The middle arpeggios bring about some much-needed energy and warmth. The last two sections revisit the themes from the beginning, but this time in the relative major. The last section specifically revisits the earlier 12/8 theme in 4/4, filling the space with more consistent 8ths/16ths and creating a steady ground for the end to land on. The filled space in the last section feels more comfortable in a reassuring sense, almost as if we've let the light in. Thanks for listening to this marimba solo/watching the video and I hope it helps you let the light in too!
Whispers of Winter
The weather is colder and the days feel shorter, but the year is not yet over. The holidays have just begun and the falling of autumn leaves is just about done. Take a step outside, feel a chilliness in the air, smell the faint hint of possible snow, and listen to the whispers of the upcoming winter. That nostalgic, bittersweet feeling is what I felt when writing this original composition for percussion ensemble. Gather by the fire with a cup of coffee or hot cocoa to get warm as you listen to this cozy winter theme!
Beneath the Spider Web
Celebrate spook month with this original composition for percussion ensemble! The shorter wooden sounds of the xylophone and marimba create an unsettling empty atmosphere, accompanied by drum set, djembe, and a bunch of auxiliary percussion. This includes triangle, tambourine, shakers, claves, wood blocks, and even rainstick. The glockenspiel and vibraphone, which frequently have melody and/or harmony in percussion pieces, play a more supportive role this time around. I was inspired to write this piece for a spooky game level, such as for a haunted mansion or an abandoned castle of sorts. Watch your step and keep your head low, careful to avoid getting caught in any webs, as you walk around this spooky season!
Sunset Breeze
The light blue sky turns to a warm orange as the afternoon fades into evening. A faint breeze provides a breath of fresh air as the sun begins to set. After a toasty summer, the anticipation for cool autumn weather grows ever stronger. This is the setting that came to mind when I wrote this relaxing piece of music for mallet percussion trio. Listen to the combination of glockenspiel, vibraphone, and marimba and let your mind wander as you enjoy this calming original composition. This trio is perfect for students that are just starting to learn how to perform without a conductor, as well as beginner 4-mallet players practicing good technique and arpeggio accuracy.
Coffee Shop Vibes
I came up with a terrible pun one day that turned itself into a wonderful idea: Coffee Shop Vibes - as in vibes from a coffee shop, but also as in vibraphone vibes. I started with three vibraphone parts and kept building onto it with more instruments, both melodic and rhythmic. The melodic parts fade out in the same order they enter while the rhythmic parts fade out in the opposite order. Every four measures something changes and brings a new idea, which shifts focus to different instruments. Sit back, relax, sip some coffee, and enjoy some percussive jams!
Amatonormativity
Experiences with video game music covers and percussion ensemble repertoire come together in this original composition. Frequent time signature changes keep the pulse moving with a steady groove. The rhythms in the melody are inspired by the syllables from the word in the title. Amatonormativity is the assumption that a monogamous romantic relationship is the ultimate happiness a person can achieve in life and should be held higher than all other interpersonal relationships. As someone who does not live within this assumed normal, I like to think of this song as my battle theme against the concept of amatonormativity itself. I hope you enjoy listening to my first original composition!
