Original Compositions

Superstars on the Horizon

I challenged myself to compose original character themes inspired by Animal Crossing villagers. Since there are usually ten villagers per island (in New Horizons), I chose ten villagers to compose themes for. I've lovingly titled this album "Superstars on the Horizon" in honor of these ten superstars in New Horizons!

The Battle Must Be Won - Original Composition (Percussion Ensemble) | V-Ron Media

This is The Battle Must Be Won, an original theme I composed for percussion ensemble. Last but certainly not least is Kid Cat, a jock villager with a banger theme song! Inspired by his superhero helmet and default No. 1 shirt, I felt like his theme would play during a dramatic fight scene while he’s off to save the world. It almost reminds me of a Super Sentai opening. Given that my favorite K.K. Slider song plays in his home (Go K.K. Rider!), I thought this would be fitting for his character! Every single part was a ton of fun to play and record! In addition to melody/harmony and drum/aux parts, there’s a lot of fun background parts in this one. One of the marimba parts has a cool little ascending line with the same rhythm as the other marimba parts (that stay on the same notes for the entire measure) that helps you feel like it’s time to get moving, even during the first eight bars when things are just getting started. The descending line in the electric piano part is simple but effective, building momentum into the next section when the feel changes. I brought that line back at the end too (although with different notes to match the different chords of course), which really just brings it all home together. Special shoutout to the drum set part: that’s the first time I’ve ever put the focus on the floor tom while only using the ride cymbal on 2 and 4 (as opposed to keeping the constant notes on the ride cymbal just like they were on the hi-hat) and I really liked how it turned out. Of course the extra two cymbals at the end (China cymbal and splash cymbal) were the icing on the cake! I knew as soon as I finished this song that it would be the last song on the album. This is one of my favorite things I’ve ever created and it’s been so hard not to share it early over the last two years. What’s really funny is that the first day I started this theme, I actually sat down to write one of the other themes and accidentally started this instead. Funny how that works out sometimes! To give you some behind-the-scenes context, this was actually the fourth song I wrote out of all ten themes. (The last song was Erik’s theme, which ended up being the first video I posted haha) Would anyone be interested in a video talking about how I made the album and maybe some other behind-the-scenes stuff? Could you hear this theme playing while Kid Cat leads his team of Agent S, Big Top, and Rocket to save the day? (If anyone wants to make a video with the four of them while this song plays in the background, that would legit make me one of the happiest people on the planet, please please please send it to me if you do!) What other video games would you like me to write original themes for? I could totally see myself digging into something Pokémon or Stardew Valley inspired… Thank you so much for sticking around as I shared each video from my original album and I hope you enjoy this final video! #TheBattleMustBeWon #VGMGoneOriginal #originalcomposition #vgm P.S. Punchy and Kid Cat are best friends on my island and you can’t change my mind. I can’t believe Kid Cat saw Punchy plop it on the ground and essentially said “yooo that’s a good idea, yeah me too bro.” I was originally gonna use footage of Kid Cat working out for the end screen, but Kid Cat and Punchy being best friends was just too good to pass up! -------------------- Original Composer: V-Ron Media (that's me!) -- Programs/Equipment Used -- Mallet Parts: Liberty One Glockenspiel, Liberty One Glockenspiel, Yamaha Vibraphone, and Deagan Marimba Performance Videos: iPhone 14 Pro Game Video: Elgato HD60 X Capture Card/OBS (Animal Crossing: New Horizons) Audio Production: Logic Pro Photo Editing: Adobe Photoshop 2023 Video Editing: Adobe Premiere Pro 2023 -------------------- -- Support Me on Patreon -- https://patreon.com/vronmediamusic -- Visit My Website -- https://vronmedia.wixsite.com/vronmediamusic -- Social Media and Streaming Services -- Linktree: https://linktr.ee/vronmediamusic -- Discord and More -- Join my Discord server: https://discord.gg/t6c62QNWwv Request a song for me cover: https://forms.gle/2QMSiURKXmgGp69F7 Streaming/Sheet Music Links: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iFjy5iqvdVvMTmg_umr2rJrj9JQIkxIc4iJXeksQ3gs/edit?usp=sharing

When it came to choosing villagers for my album, I knew I wanted to pick at least one of the new ones from ACNH. I didn't have any snooty villagers yet, so Judy was the perfect fit! Whenever I see Judy's house with all the pastel colors and the stars on the wall, it makes me think about dreaming while listening to relaxing music and that's how this theme came about! Honestly it kinda sounds like something you'd hear in the background of an arts and crafts video, but I could totally see Judy listening to this while hanging out in her house. This song has a pretty simple chord structure, so I threw in some time signature changes to keep the listener on their toes! I think the 5/4 section is my favorite to listen to, but the 12/8 was the most fun to play with the marimba arpeggios. The idea behind the theme stays the same throughout the song, but with the time changes it's almost a "variations upon a theme" kind of vibe. I like to think of each of the time signatures as the theme for different parts of a big castle or palace, like each section has its own unique version of the same theme. Do you think this theme fits Judy? What other Animal Crossing villagers would you like to see me write theme songs for? Be sure to let me know down in the comments below! Golden Reflections - Original Composition (Percussion Ensemble) | V-Ron Media

This is Golden Reflections, an original theme I composed for percussion ensemble. This is part of my album "Superstars on the Horizon," which includes 10 original character themes inspired by Animal Crossing villagers. ** Get This Original Composition ** Streaming: https://album.link/superstarsonthehorizon Sheet Music: https://www.musicnotes.com/l/Th5h8 Next up from my original album we have the normal dog Goldie! There are so many good normal villagers and it was really hard for me to choose which one to compose a theme for, but at the end of the day I knew it had to be Goldie. If it weren't for Isabelle, then in my opinion Goldie would be best Animal Crossing doggo no questions asked. (Although I'm not gonna lie, I was really tempted to write a song about Daisy's fleas LMAO) So why a ballad? Well, I had a gig last year where I played drum set for a college chorus concert and there were some student solos between the bigger pieces with everyone. One of the solos was "Can't Help Falling in Love," specifically the Haley Reinhart cover version, and the arrangement we played got my gears turning. The piano player (accompanist for the choir) just gave the upright bass player and me lead sheets and told us to come up with something that fit the style. The patterns we played for that concert are pretty similar to the style I ended up using with this theme. I also really liked how the chord progression was simple for the A section but the B section had a bit more going on, which you can certainly hear here. Any gigging jazz musician will immediately recognize the inspiration for the chord changes in this B section. Tbh I almost called this song "Golden Leaves," but I thought it would be too on the nose, so I went with Golden Reflections instead. I had an image in my head of warm orange, almost-golden sunset light reflecting off the leaves on an autumn evening, so that's where "Golden Reflections" came from. I've always thought it's kind of neat to see where all these different inspirations come from to create a final product. In this case, I think it's the perfect theme for sweet Goldie! Do you think this theme fits Goldie? What other Animal Crossing villagers would you like to see me write theme songs for? Be sure to let me know down in the comments below! Song to Snack By - Original Composition (Percussion Ensemble) | V-Ron Media

This is Song to Snack By, an original theme I composed for percussion ensemble. This is part of my album "Superstars on the Horizon," which includes 10 original character themes inspired by Animal Crossing villagers. ** Get This Original Composition ** Streaming: https://album.link/superstarsonthehorizon Sheet Music: https://www.musicnotes.com/l/ch5hF This theme was named by none other than Punchy himself! I'd already composed it and toyed around with a couple other names (something about sleepy cats and snack time), but I was completely shocked when he just dropped that concert idea out of nowhere! Of course I already had a name for the album by this point, so I turned his concert idea into the name for his character theme (taking off the "s" from "songs" to "song" since it's just one theme). I didn't have my capture card set up and was playing handheld mode, so you wouldn't believe how stressed I suddenly was to make sure I got that perfect 30 seconds lol. (Yes I've been holding onto that clip for two years just for this video!) Fun fact about this one, I actually ended up recording the whole thing twice. I recorded it the first time and overall just wasn't happy with how it was sounding, so I re-exported the midi from Finale into a new Logic file and completely started over. I'll only accept the best for Punchy! The first time I'd recorded mallets first, so this time I decided to record the auxiliary percussion first... but before that, a last-minute addition: the cajon. I sat down with the cajon and completely made up a part on the spot to use as a "cheater" of sorts that would help me line up the other parts better, but as soon as I finished recording the take I knew I was keeping it forever. I'm so glad I decided to record audio/video at the same time just in case, apparently I know myself too well haha. Now I simply can't hear this song without it; can't believe this theme existed a whole two years without it! (You can hear that version somewhere in the Q&A video if you really want to...) (In case you're wondering, I did go back and transcribe the cajon part to add to the score/parts for sheet music, so it's all there in the finished product!) Okay enough about the cajon part, let's talk about the rest of the piece. This song has a lot of New Leaf vibes (pun intended) in its space and aux percussion. A lot of ACNL tracks use aux percussion to set the groove (rather than drum set) and I took a similar approach with this theme. We even have more aux percussion than mallet percussion this time! I feel like it does a good job of never overpowering the melodic parts though, which is exactly what I was going for. How much footage did I record of Punchy having the zoomies for this video? Don't ask because I don't know, but I do know that I need to clean my laptop storage off onto my external hard drive now that this is done LOL Do you think this theme fits Punchy? What other Animal Crossing villagers would you like to see me write theme songs for? Be sure to let me know down in the comments below! Wait what do you mean it's only May? Well that's just too bad cause we're gonna get spooky today. Next up from my original album is Muffy the spooky-I mean sisterly sheep! My early spooky vibes are totally justified by the bewitched set furniture/clothing from Muffy's Creepy Cookie in Pocket Camp. Alas, that's what inspired this theme! Even though this is an Animal Crossing-inspired album, this song's title definitely feels more like a Stardew Valley name whoops (The Sun Can Bend An Orange Sky and The Wind Can Be Still both come to mind lol). The last original theme I posted had tons of synth layers and effects, so I thought it'd be a fun contrast for the next one to be all recorded instruments. I didn't even double the marimba bassline with midi electric bass this time like I normally do. This is truly an authentic percussion ensemble experience! Well okay maybe they don't all have toy pianos, but other than that it's typical percussion instrumentation. Besides, I just couldn't resist adding toy piano to a spooky theme. Do you think this theme fits Muffy? What other Animal Crossing villagers would you like to see me write theme songs for? Be sure to let me know down in the comments below! Prepare for some chill vibes! When I composed this song, I had a specific vision of Tom sitting in a chair next to a window, staring outside on a rainy day thinking of all the time people have wasted crying over spilled milk. His catchphrase is "there's no use crying over spilled milk" and that's what inspired this theme! This is the first time I've ever ventured into the world of lo-fi. This song started as a fun experiment and ended up as one of my favorite things I've ever made. I added some extra effects to the electric piano parts and put some extra reverb on the vibraphone part. Even though there are plenty of new ideas here, there are some V-Ron classics as well - the drum parts are mixed similarly to my other originals, the bowed vibes are a welcome addition, and we've got plenty of marimba rolls! I went with some different lighting for this video as well, including a slow color-changing rainbow effect from my ring light, to really bring home the chill vibes. Do you think this theme fits Tom? Fresh Water by the Pond - Original Composition (Percussion Ensemble) | V-Ron Media

This is Fresh Water by the Pond, an original theme I composed for percussion ensemble. This is part of my album "Superstars on the Horizon," which includes 10 original character themes inspired by Animal Crossing villagers. ** Get This Original Composition ** Streaming: https://album.link/superstarsonthehorizon Sheet Music: https://www.musicnotes.com/l/Ch5hP It's been a while since I've posted any music from my upcoming original album. Between Pokémon Day, Mar10 Day, March Caprice, and April Fool's Day (plus other projects I can't announce yet), I've stayed busy with lots of VGM! Now that things are starting to wind down, it's time to get back to work on my original album - starting today with Freckles! I was about halfway through composing for my album and had just hit writer's block (composer's block?) when my mom asked me to write a theme song for her YT channel. I told her yes of course I would, but I wanted to be able to include it on my album, so I made her choose a villager for me to write for haha. Lo and behold, she chose Freckles! Of course one of her favorite villagers is peppy, apparently being a fan of peppy and lazy villagers runs in the family (since my favorite is Ruby and we both love Punchy). This little pink duck loves to sit by the water on Mom's island, so I stuck the image of her chilling by a pond in my head and started composing! Who says you need to have a huge ensemble of instruments to make a catchy, upbeat tune? I challenged myself to keep the instrumentation light, as opposed to using an army of auxiliary percussion like I normally do, to approach this song with a "less is more" mindset. The A section has some syncopation and upbeats in the drum set/marimba parts while the vibraphone chords hold down the fort. The B section is a bit more chill and you can definitely feel the inspiration from the Check Mii Out channel music in the marimba rhythm patterns (which isn't surprising to me since that theme appears in a lot of the playlists I listen to while editing videos and cleaning up sheet music). Then we go back to the A section to the end. For this theme (and most of the other themes on the album), I had a clear place in mind where it would loop back to if this were ever used in a game, but then I created an ending for the album and sheet music. (Reminder: I'll be releasing sheet music for all 10 themes after the album is completed and released on streaming services!) Overall, I'm really happy with how this less-is-more approach worked out! Do you think this theme fits Freckles? What other Animal Crossing villagers would you like to see me write theme songs for? Be sure to let me know down in the comments below! Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed the video! #FreshWaterbythePond #VGMGoneOriginal #originalcomposition #vgm P.S. I double-checked and "fresh water" is correct since it's a noun. If it were used an adjective, such as "freshwater habitat" or "freshwater lake," then it would be "freshwater" as one word. I had to do something similar with pop star vs popstar and cafe vs café for the last two song titles, plus I remember looking up spider web vs spiderweb way back when for Beneath the Spider Web, so apparently I need to go back and review some elementary-level language at some point... Nobody told me the hardest part about composing original songs would be naming them lol -------------------- Original Composer: V-Ron Media (that's me!) -- Programs/Equipment Used -- Mallet Parts: Liberty One Glockenspiel, Liberty One Xylophone, Yamaha Vibraphone, and Deagan Marimba Performance Videos: iPhone 14 Pro Game Video: Video Capture feature on the Nintendo Switch (Animal Crossing: New Horizons) Audio Recording/Mixing: Logic Pro Photo Editing: Adobe Photoshop 2023 Video Editing: Adobe Premiere Pro 2023 -------------------- -- Support Me on Patreon -- https://patreon.com/vronmediamusic -- Visit My Website -- https://vronmedia.wixsite.com/vronmediamusic -- Social Media and Streaming Services -- Linktree: https://linktr.ee/vronmediamusic -- Discord and More -- Join my Discord server: https://discord.gg/t6c62QNWwv Request a song for me cover: https://forms.gle/2QMSiURKXmgGp69F7 Streaming/Sheet Music Links: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iFjy5iqvdVvMTmg_umr2rJrj9JQIkxIc4iJXeksQ3gs/edit?usp=sharing

Whatever, but first my coffee... (That's what the green shirt says, see what I did there?) Okay now that I've had my coffee, let me introduce you to Marshal's theme! I don't remember why, but for some reason his catchphrase became "marshmallow" on my island for a long time, followed by "marshmelon" as some strange combination of marshmallow and melon (again I don't know, don't ask me why, it just happened), which is even still his catchphrase today. Somehow this turned into the idea that Marshal would own a coffee shop called "Marshmallow Café" and I stuck to that idea. This smug squirrel has a decent amount of coffee items in his home, plus he even plays K.K. Bossa in his house, so I thought a coffee-inspired bossa nova would be perfect for him! Let the Light In

This 4-mallet marimba solo is my original composition for "Lighthouse," a fundraiser album for Out Youth. Out Youth is a charity that supports LGBTQIA+ youth in central Texas and 100% of the profits from this album will be donated to support their cause. I’m incredibly grateful to Caitlin Ayala for putting this album together and inviting me to compose a piece for it!

The beginning sections of this solo have more dissonance and space, reflecting a sense of emptiness and discomfort. The middle arpeggios bring about some much-needed energy and warmth. The last two sections revisit the themes from the beginning, but this time in the relative major. The last section specifically revisits the earlier 12/8 theme in 4/4, filling the space with more consistent 8ths/16ths and creating a steady ground for the end to land on. The filled space in the last section feels more comfortable in a reassuring sense, almost as if we've let the light in. Thanks for listening to this marimba solo/watching the video and I hope it helps you let the light in too!

Whispers of Winter

The weather is colder and the days feel shorter, but the year is not yet over. The holidays have just begun and the falling of autumn leaves is just about done. Take a step outside, feel a chilliness in the air, smell the faint hint of possible snow, and listen to the whispers of the upcoming winter. That nostalgic, bittersweet feeling is what I felt when writing this original composition for percussion ensemble. Gather by the fire with a cup of coffee or hot cocoa to get warm as you listen to this cozy winter theme!

Beneath the Spider Web

Celebrate spook month with this original composition for percussion ensemble! The shorter wooden sounds of the xylophone and marimba create an unsettling empty atmosphere, accompanied by drum set, djembe, and a bunch of auxiliary percussion. This includes triangle, tambourine, shakers, claves, wood blocks, and even rainstick. The glockenspiel and vibraphone, which frequently have melody and/or harmony in percussion pieces, play a more supportive role this time around. I was inspired to write this piece for a spooky game level, such as for a haunted mansion or an abandoned castle of sorts. Watch your step and keep your head low, careful to avoid getting caught in any webs, as you walk around this spooky season!

Sunset Breeze

The light blue sky turns to a warm orange as the afternoon fades into evening. A faint breeze provides a breath of fresh air as the sun begins to set. After a toasty summer, the anticipation for cool autumn weather grows ever stronger. This is the setting that came to mind when I wrote this relaxing piece of music for mallet percussion trio. Listen to the combination of glockenspiel, vibraphone, and marimba and let your mind wander as you enjoy this calming original composition. This trio is perfect for students that are just starting to learn how to perform without a conductor, as well as beginner 4-mallet players practicing good technique and arpeggio accuracy.

Coffee Shop Vibes

I came up with a terrible pun one day that turned itself into a wonderful idea: Coffee Shop Vibes - as in vibes from a coffee shop, but also as in vibraphone vibes. I started with three vibraphone parts and kept building onto it with more instruments, both melodic and rhythmic. The melodic parts fade out in the same order they enter while the rhythmic parts fade out in the opposite order. Every four measures something changes and brings a new idea, which shifts focus to different instruments. Sit back, relax, sip some coffee, and enjoy some percussive jams!

Amatonormativity

Experiences with video game music covers and percussion ensemble repertoire come together in this original composition. Frequent time signature changes keep the pulse moving with a steady groove. The rhythms in the melody are inspired by the syllables from the word in the title. Amatonormativity is the assumption that a monogamous romantic relationship is the ultimate happiness a person can achieve in life and should be held higher than all other interpersonal relationships. As someone who does not live within this assumed normal, I like to think of this song as my battle theme against the concept of amatonormativity itself. I hope you enjoy listening to my first original composition!
